ANGRY TERRIER

Lola, Tilly, and Sassy made their way along the benches.

“We didn’t really get anywhere with Peter Bower,” Tilly said.

“We learned more than you might think.” Lola smiled.

“Do tell?”

“Has great socks, should go back and check for more!” Sassy said as Lola put her down but kept a firm hold on her lead.

“For a start, it looks like the news of Una’s death is not widespread, as of yet. That could give us a clue. If someone knows, then how did they find out? However, that said, I don’t think Peter is a suspect.”

“I wouldn’t want to rule him out so quickly.” Tilly had drawn her eyebrows down as if she was deep in thought.

“He not killer,” Sassy said. “He nice man and happy, too happy to have done bad thing.”

Lola understood. What Sassy was saying, was that Peter would not be able to control his emotions as well as he had if he had recently killed. He would not be as relaxed as he was. It was not an exact science, that the little dog used, but it was highly reliable — unless, of course, the killer was a sociopath. In that case, they could hide their emotions, or should she say, wouldn’t have any emotion following the heinous event.

They had arrived at the bench of the Red Irish Terrier and Paddy McKiernan. Lola had really enjoyed the little terrier’s performance but she seemed to be a little snappy with the crowds.

As people reached out to take selfies, the terrier squared up to them, snapping and growling, causing them to jump back and scuttle away. Paddy seemed pleased with this reaction. He was sitting in front of her, brooding and almost growling at the crowds as much as his dog.

Lola loosened Sassy's lead and the little Frenchie begin her investigation of the benches and the area around them. Hopefully, she wouldn’t be distracted by socks this time.

Lola hadn’t taken a lot of notice of Mr. McKiernan when he was showing the dog. He was wearing a brown suit and was short and a little heavy; alongside the athletic-looking terrier he was a distraction but he clearly understood. Whereas other handlers were wearing their finery, drawing the eye of the judge from their dogs to them, Paddy was in drab clothes that made you want to look past him and at his dog. It worked well.

“What did you think of the result?” Lola asked.

Paddy’s eyes flashed at her as he raised his head. For a moment, she thought he would stand, that he might even come at her for his fists were raised in front of him.

“I said my piece, dat woman cheated. We all know it.”

The accent was heavy but Lola managed to understand him despite the speed with which he spoke. “I guess she deserves everything she gets.” Lola smiled at him hoping to get some feeling of friendship as Sassy took big sniffs in his bag.

“Aye, she does. The likes of her will get their comeuppance, I swear it.
